چکیده

Classification of terrain is one of the most important applications of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (POLSAR) image analysis. This paper presents a simple method to classify terrain by the use of the correlation coefficients in the circular polarization basis together with the total power of the scattering matrix in the X-band. The reflection symmetry condition that the co-polarized and the cross-polarized correlations are close to zero for natural distributed scatterers is utilized to extract characteristic parameters of small forests or cluster of trees, and oriented urban building blocks with respect to the direction of the radar illumination. Both of these kinds of scatterers are difficult to identify in high resolution POLSAR images of complex urban areas. The indices employed here are the correlation coefficient, a modified coefficient normalized by the reflection symmetric conditional case, and the total power. It is shown that forest areas and oriented building blocks are easily detected and identified. The terrain classification yielded by these combinations is very accurate as confirmed by photographic ground truth images. key words: radar polarimetry, polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR), correlation coefficient, circular polarization basis, scattering power

Classification of Terrain Using the Correlation Coefficient in the Circular Polarization Basis for X-band POLSAR data

Classification of terrain is one of the most important applications of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (POLSAR) sensing. This paper presents a simple method to classify terrain by the correlation coefficients in the circular polarization basis and the total power of scattering matrix in the X-band. It is known that the circular polarization correlation coefficient contains essential polar...

Separation of Built-up Areas Using Polarization Orientation from Polarimetric Sar Images

Polarimetric decomposition and classification are important applications for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) images. Among many methods developed so far, entropy-anisotropy-alpha classification [1] and three component decomposition [2] are most popular. In an urban area analysis, it is found that the polarimetric analysis has a problem to identify built-up areas. With the three c...

Three-Step Semi-Empirical Radiometric Terrain Correction Approach for PolSAR Data Applied to Forested Areas

In recent decades, most methods proposed for radiometric slope correction involved the backscattering intensity values in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. However, these methods are not fully applicable to quad-polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) matrix data. In this paper, we propose a three-step semi-empirical radiometric terrain correction approach for PolSAR forest area data. The three steps of t...

A New Circular Polarization Metamaterial Ferrite Phase Shifter

In this paper, a new X band Metamaterial (MTM) based ferrite phase shifter is presented. The phase shifter is excited by circular polarized wave base on combination of TE10 and TE01 modes in a square waveguide. In order to synthesize negative refractive index metamaterial (NIM), negative permeability of ferrite slabs in extraordinary mode is mixed with the negative permitivity of printed period...

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...
